10 tips for looking after your feet

1 – Wash your feet often

Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water, but destroy your skin’s natural oils by sking it off.

2 – Dry your feet well

Dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, especially between the toes which is where fungal infections such as athlete’s foot can develop.

3 – Moisturise and file

If your skin is dry, apply moisturising cream all over the foot, but don’t apply between your toes. Remove hard skin and calluses with a foot file or a pumice stone – but done file too hard or you can make the problem worse.

4 – Cut toenails carefully

Trim your toenails regularly using proper nail clippers. Avoid ingrowing toenails by cutting straight across, never trim your toenails at an angle or down the edges.

5 – Buy new shoes in the afternoon

Buy new shoes in the afternoon. Your feet swell as the day progresses and if shoes fit in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest, you know that they will always be comfortable.

6 – Footwear tips for work

Wear comfortable shoes to and from the office and only wear your smart shoes once you get to the office. Also, try to vary the heel height, between low, medium and high.

7 – Limit time wearing high heels

Keep your high heels and pointed toe shoes for special occasions only, and always wear the right shoes for the job, sensible shoes for walking, trainers for exercise.

8 – Change your socks often to avoid foot odour

Nobody likes smelly feet, so change your socks at least every day, if you have been particularly active or in hot weather change them more often.  Smelly feet comes from bacteria which can grow in your socks.

9 – Watch out for foot bugs in communal changing areas

Avoid catching athlete’s foot and verrucas by wearing flip flops in the gym or at the swimming pool.

10 – Take care with flip flops

Don’t wear flip lops all of the time because they don’t provide support for your feet and can give you arch and heel pain if you wear them too much.

Foot pain advice for over-60s

If you’re over 60, foot care becomes even more important. Age takes its toll: your skin thins, your joints begin to stiffen and your feet become more vulnerable to the cold.

Not only that, but as The Care Team podiatrist says: “as we get older it gets physically more difficult for us to get to our feet.”

She says: “Go to see a professional podiatrist for a foot check every six months and never put up with foot pain as if it is normal. If your feet hurt talk to an expert”
