Chairs that help you stand up are known as riser recliner chairs. For many people, something as simple as standing up from a chair can become difficult over time. Whether it’s due to age, arthritis, surgery recovery, or reduced mobility, getting out of a low chair can put strain on the knees, hips, and back.

Fortunately, there are chairs designed specifically to help you stand up safely and comfortably. Riser recliner chairs are becoming increasingly popular for people who want to remain independent at home.

What Chairs Help You Stand Up?

The most common type of chair designed to help people stand is called a riser recliner chair (sometimes also known as a lift chair). These chairs use a motorised lifting mechanism that gently tilts and raises the seat to help the user move into a standing position.

At the press of a button on a simple handheld remote control, the chair can:

Lift upward to help you stand

Lower slowly to help you sit down

Recline for comfort and relaxation

This controlled movement makes it much easier and safer to get in and out of the chair without putting excessive strain on joints or muscles.

Chairs That Help You Stand Up – How Riser Recliner Chairs Work

Although they look similar to a normal armchair, riser recliners contain a powerful but quiet electric motor inside the frame.

When activated, the mechanism:

Gradually raises the entire seat

Tilts the chair slightly forward

Positions you into an almost standing position

This means you don’t have to push yourself up using your legs or arms, which can be especially helpful for people with mobility problems.

Most models also allow you to recline the backrest and elevate your legs, making them ideal for relaxing, watching TV, or even napping.

Who Can Benefit From a Chair That Helps You Stand Up?

Riser recliner chairs are often used by people who:

Struggle to stand from a low chair or sofa

Have arthritis or joint pain

Are recovering from surgery

Have balance or mobility issues

Want to maintain independence at home

These chairs reduce strain on the body and can help people remain comfortable and independent in their own homes for longer.

Chairs That Help You Stand Up – The Benefits of Riser Recliner Chairs

1. Easier Standing and Sitting

The lifting action helps you transition smoothly between sitting and standing without effort.

2. Increased Independence

Many users no longer need assistance from family members or carers to get out of a chair.

3. Reduced Risk of Falls

By providing controlled support when standing, riser recliners help reduce the risk of losing balance.

4. Improved Comfort

Many chairs also offer reclining positions that improve circulation and reduce pressure on joints.

5. Better Posture Support

Supportive cushions and ergonomic design help maintain proper spinal alignment while sitting.

Choosing the Right Chair for Your Needs

When selecting a chair that helps you stand up, it’s important to consider:

Seat height and depth

Motor type (single or dual motor)

Comfort and cushioning

Fabric or leather options

Ease of remote control use

A properly fitted chair can make a significant difference in comfort and mobility.

Lift Chairs for Elderly People – A Complete UK Guide

Lift chairs for elderly people are also known commonly as riser recliner chairs. As we age, simple daily movements like standing up from a chair or sitting down safely can become increasingly difficult. For many elderly people, this loss of mobility can affect comfort, confidence, and independence at home.

That’s where lift chairs for elderly people come in.

Often known in the UK as riser recliner chairs, lift chairs are specially designed to support people with limited mobility, helping them sit, recline, and stand with ease. In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what lift chairs are, who they’re for, the different types available, and how to choose the right one.

Life Chairs For The Elderly – What Is a Lift Chair?

A lift chair is a motorised armchair that gently tilts forward to help the user move from a seated to a standing position, and lowers back down safely when sitting.

At the touch of a button, the chair:

Raises the seat to reduce strain on knees and hips

Provides controlled movement for safety

Allows comfortable reclining for rest and relaxation

In the UK, lift chairs are more commonly referred to as riser recliner chairs, but the function is exactly the same.

Lift Chairs vs Riser Recliner Chairs (UK Explanation)

You may notice that many UK suppliers talk about riser recliners rather than lift chairs.

Here’s the difference:

Lift chair – common term in the US

Riser recliner chair – standard UK term

Both describe the same type of chair: a powered chair that lifts, lowers, and reclines to support elderly users and those with mobility challenges.

If you’re searching for lift chairs for elderly people in the UK, you’re almost always looking for a riser recliner chair.

By reducing physical strain, lift chairs help users stay independent for longer and reduce the risk of falls at home.

If you’re looking for a slim stair lift, you probably have a narrow staircase. Our engineers specialise in stairlifts for narrow stairs and we have a few options which might be suitable. The choice of stairlifts starts with your staircase and whether you have a straight one or one with a bend or curve in it.

With a straight staircase, we will often recommend a suitable stairlift made for straight stairs. Straight stairlifts are often cheaper than their curved counterparts and generally are quicker to install too.

With a curved stairlift, there’s more customisation needed because the rail will be made to fit around your staircase specifically.

Slim Stair Lift – Straight Stairs

Here’s a slim stair lift which we might choose for a straight staircase.

This is the Stannah 600 stairlift which is also available as a reconditioned model if you’re on a budget. Reconditioned stairlifts are professionally refurbished stairlifts which have passed a thorough inspection and assessment. They come with a full 12 month warranty.

This stairlift is perfect for a straight staircase and particularly those with a slim fit. The Stannah 600 is a superb build quality and can sit well back on the rail, extremely close to the wall. this makes it perfect for very narrow and slim staircases where some stairlift models will struggle.

Slim Stair Lift – Curved Staircases

When a staircase is curved, we also have a solution if you need a particularly slim stair lift. We will often opt for one of two models. We like the Stannah 260 because again it can be used on very narrow stairs. In the pictures below you can see how close it sits towards the wall, making it perfect for narrow staircases with a bend in them.

When this stairlift isn’t a good fit, we also have an “ace” up our sleeve! This is the stairlift “go-to” when nothing else will do. The Flow X stairlift from Access BDD (Thyssen-Krupp) is often cited as the slimmest stairlift on the market and is particularly clever when it comes to navigating narrow, curved stairs.

Here’s a couple of pictures on awkward curved staircases showing just how versatile the Flow X really is.

The Flow X is one of a kind and can fit where other stairlifts cannot! It’s patented ASL (Advanced Swivelling and Levelling) operation means it can tilt, pivot and climb/descend simultaneously. This gives it an advantage on stairs where other stairlifts are too limited to be installed.

The single rail is an advantage too and allows it to navigate awkward doorways and corridors without obstructing them. While some stairlifts require a “run-on” to allow the stairlift to pivot at the top and bottom of the stairs, this one doesn’t. It can park and be called from anywhere on the rail from a remote control and it’s “drop nose” rail means it can be placed close to a doorway without obstruction.

What Are Specialist Chairs for Disabled People?

Specialist chairs for disabled users are purpose-built seating solutions designed for individuals who need extra physical support due to disability, illness, or reduced mobility. Unlike standard armchairs, these chairs are engineered to provide:

Specialist Chairs for the Elderly: Supporting Comfort and Independence

As we age, everyday movements such as sitting down or standing up can become more difficult. Specialist chairs for the elderly are designed to address age-related mobility issues while promoting independence and confidence at home.

These chairs are particularly helpful for older adults who experience:

Joint stiffness or arthritis

Key Benefits of Specialist Chairs for Disabled and Elderly Users

Increased Independence

Rise and recline features allow users to sit and stand with minimal effort, reducing reliance on others.

Enhanced Safety

Stable frames, supportive armrests, and controlled movements help reduce the risk of falls.

Better Circulation

Leg elevation and reclining options can improve blood flow and reduce swelling in the legs and feet.

Types of Specialist Chairs Available

There are several types of specialist chairs available to suit different needs and levels of mobility:

What Is the Average Cost of a Stair Lift in the UK?

If you’re considering installing a stair lift in your home, one of the first questions you’ll likely have is: how much does a stair lift cost? The average cost of a stair lift in the UK depends on a few key factors — the type of staircase you have, the model you choose, and any additional features or customisations you need.

At The Care Team, we supply and install a wide range of stairlifts, including specialist models designed for narrow stairs, which are ideal for homes where space is limited.

Let’s break down what you can expect to pay.

💰 Average Cost of a Straight Stair Lift

A straight stair lift is the most affordable option because it runs along a single, straight rail.

Average cost (new): from around £2,000 – £2,500

Average cost (reconditioned): from around £1,250 – £1,800

These lifts can usually be installed quickly — sometimes within a few days — and offer excellent value for money if your staircase doesn’t have any turns or landings.

🔄 Average Cost of a Curved Stair Lift

If your stairs have bends, corners, or intermediate landings, you’ll need a curved stair lift. These lifts are custom-made to fit the exact shape of your staircase, which increases both the price and installation time.

Average cost (new): from £3,500 upwards

Average cost (reconditioned): from £2,950 upwards

While curved stair lifts cost more than straight ones, they provide seamless, reliable access for complex staircases — and are built to perfectly match your home’s layout.

🏡 Stair Lifts for Narrow Stairs

For homes with narrow or steep staircases, The Care Team offers specialist slimline stairlifts designed to take up minimal space while still providing full comfort and safety. See our stairlifts for narrow stairs page.

Because these models require a more compact design and custom engineering, stairlifts for narrow stairs generally cost more than average.

Expect to pay slightly higher than the prices listed above — but the investment is well worth it if your home layout makes a standard lift unsuitable. Our team can visit your property to measure and recommend the most practical, space-saving option.

⚙️ Factors That Affect the Cost of a Stair Lift

A few things can influence how much you’ll pay for your stair lift:

Type of staircase (straight, curved, or narrow)

New vs reconditioned (reconditioned models are more budget-friendly)

Additional features (powered swivel seats, folding rails, or upgraded upholstery)

Installation complexity (tight corners or narrow passages may require a bespoke setup)

🕒 Installation and Aftercare

At The Care Team, we pride ourselves on fast, reliable installation and ongoing aftercare. Straight stair lifts can often be fitted within a couple of days, while curved or narrow stair models may take a little longer due to their made-to-measure design.

All our stair lifts come with professional fitting, full warranty, and local support for complete peace of mind.

We have found the best stairlift for narrow stairs and it’s the Flow X from Thyssen Krupp (Now Access BDD). The Flow X has a unique patented technology which allows it to pivot the chair while in motion. This makes it the best stairlift for awkward staircases. It also has a super slim design and folds down to only 38cm in width when not in use:

Certain staircases simply aren’t suitable for a stairlift and it’s in those situations where the Flow X comes into its own! So if you have a very narrow staircase and no other stairlift will fit, we often recommend this one.

Best Stairlift For Narrow Stairs – Awkward Fittings

Another reason you might need a specialist stairlift such as this one is with a tight bend or an obstacle of some sort. Often, it is an awkward radiator which causes a problem, or a doorway at the base or top of the stairs.

In these picture you can see how the Flow’s “drop nose” rail gets around the problem of a doorway near the base of the stairs.

Many stairlifts require more space to park, or pivot for entry/exit at the top/bottom of the staircase. But the Flow X can be parked on the rail anywhere and the rail adapted for the best accessibility.

Best Stairlift For Narrow Stairs – ASL Tech

There’s ASL tech in this model (Advanced Swivel and Levelling). This means it can seamlessly pivot and glide around obstacles with ease! The Flow X has the patent on this technology. This makes it is the most agile stairlift available.

Here’s a picture of the stairlift being programmed to turn a tight corner without hitting the newel post.

Even spiral staircases are no match for the Flow!

When Would Another Stairlift Be Suitable?

If you asked us which is the best stairlift for narrow stairs, we would always say the Flow X! However, with a higher specification stairlift you’re looking at a higher cost. There are lower cost options if your staircase will allow. Particularly for a straight staircase, you may not need such an advanced stairlift as this one.

We would recommend this higher-spec model usually only when absolutely needed, and if no other models would fit. Unless of course the customer particularly likes the model.

Our next “go-to” stairlift for narrow stairs would be a Stannah. Stannah’s are a household name and for a good reason. They make excellent stairlifts! In particular they are very good for tight fittings because of the chair position on the rail.

Stannah have got their design very well down with a chair which sits well back on the rail. This means there’s loads more leg room than some other lifts would enable.

With a traditional stairlift setup – with an outward facing chair position, the leg length is a vital measurement, particularly with a narrow staircase. Specifically it is the back to knee measurement or the back to toe measurement which is important (whichever is the larger).

This distance will often be the deciding factor as to which stairlift will fit on your stairs.

Stairlift Obstacles To Consider With A Narrow Staircase

Here’s a case study of a fitting of a Stannah 600 (straight staircase) in Manchester where there was a slight issue with the radiator. As you can see, the radiator affected the rail position and in this case we had to remove the radiator for the stairlift footplate to fit inside the newel post.

This staircase was fairly narrow, but the newel post at the bottom was the narrowest point. Often, it is the narrowest point of a staircase which determines which lift can be installed. With a curved staircase, there’s more potential problems because of the need to manoeuvre the stairlift around a corner.

Summary

While we have mentioned a couple of stairlift options here, ultimately, the best stairlift for narrow stairs will depend on a few other things such as:

The type of staircase – is it straight or curved?

Are there any doors at the base or the top?

Are there other obstacles such as radiators/cupboards?

How narrow is it at its narrowest point?

What is your back to knee/toe measurement?

We always recommend having an engineer offer a free assessment of your property. That way we can determine which stairlift is best for your stairs and your budget. If no other stairlifts can be fitted to a very narrow/awkward staircase, we will often will recommend the Flow X as an option if possible.
